California’s Wildfires: What Burned, What’s Next, and Why We Ride

A Look Back: The Flames That Shook 2025
In January 2025, California faced one of the worst wildfire outbreaks in state history. Fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds and extreme drought conditions, the fires scorched over 36,000 acres in Los Angeles County alone. The Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire were the worst offenders—devastating neighborhoods, destroying over 7,000 homes, and tragically taking 29 lives.
It wasn’t just a local crisis. It became a national wake-up call.
The flames moved fast. The damage was massive. But what stood out most? The bravery of the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD)—the men and women who ran toward the flames when the rest of the world watched in horror.
Meet the Heroes: The LAFD’s Frontline Fight
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) didn’t just fight fires—they fought fatigue, resource shortages, and dangerous terrain. With over 500,000 emergency calls in 2023 alone, 80% of which were medical in nature, their job goes way beyond battling blazes.
But here’s the kicker: only 3% of the city’s fire budget covers equipment, training, and tech. That means many firefighters are running toward danger with outdated gear, limited tools, and support that simply doesn’t match the scale of their responsibility.
That’s where we come in.

Why We Ride: Pedal to the Rescue
This isn’t just a bike ride. It’s a mission on wheels.
Pedal to the Rescue was born from a dream—two friends (that’s us, Mikey and Tommy) biking across the country, chasing purpose, not just pavement. From Grand Rapids, Michigan to Los Angeles, California, we’re riding over 3,200 miles to raise $50,000 for the LAFD Foundation.
Every dollar goes directly to support the fire department—helping fund things like:
- Advanced fire gear (because melted boots are a real problem)
- Life-saving technology like thermal imaging cameras and robotic rescue units
- Health & wellness programs that protect those who protect us
- Recruitment and training for the next generation of fearless firefighters
What California Still Needs
Even after the smoke clears, the work isn’t done. California continues to face climate-driven challenges—from longer fire seasons to tougher recovery efforts. Homes need rebuilding. Coastal waters are still healing from chemical runoff. Fire stations need essential upgrades.
And the LAFD? They need us—and you—more than ever.
