Fueled by Fire, Friendship, and community
Mikey and Tommy have always dreamed big and lived boldly—and biking across the U.S. has long been at the top of their bucket list. But this ride is about more than just adventure. In a time when the world can feel divided, they believe in the power of unity, kindness, and taking action. That’s why they’re turning their journey into a mission: to rally support around the devastating LA wildfires and the firefighters who risk everything to protect others. Many people want to help but don’t know how—Pedal to the Rescue offers a way to get involved, spread hope, and prove that even in challenging times, good still rolls strong.

Meet Our Team
Michael VanSuilichem
Mikey, 26, is graduating with a 2nd Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science in May, and works at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids where he runs clinical tests to aid in doctors’ diagnoses. He has always been fascinated with science and nature. This trip will allow him to explore the wilds of the United States as he has always dreamed of doing.
“Mikey is headstrong, determined, and fueled by passion. No challenge is too grand with his drive. Our comical combination is sure to keep us laughing everyday along the trail. I couldn’t imagine doing this trip with anyone else.” -Tommy

Meet our Team
Thomas Gehl II
Tommy is graduating with his Master’s degree in Management in May of 2025. He currently works for his institution as a Graduate Assistant in Athletic Communications within the athletic department. Outside of that he works as a tumbling coach, substitute teacher, and also works wedding venues. Similar to Mikey, Tommy also is curious of exploring the states and their hidden beauties along the way.
The two have known eachother since kindergarten where they both dressed up as the red power ranger for their class Halloween.
“Tommy is a large hunk of a man with a killer smile and a resolve as hard as steel. He can strike up a conversation with anyone and end up with a new friend. He never wavers from his values and always makes everyone around him laugh and smile. Having him on this trip is essential for success.” -Mikey
Our goal? Raise $50,000 for the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation—and pedal 3,200 miles from Michigan to LA in just three months. It’s a big dream powered by two bikes, a lot of grit, and hopefully you. We’d love your help spreading the word, so share, cheer, and ride with us in spirit! Here are some of the ways that donating can help the LA Fire Department.
OUr STORY
Shifting Gears with Mikey & Tommy
Pedal to the Rescue is more than a cross-country bike trip—it’s a mission in motion. This summer, Mikey and Tommy set out from Grand Rapids, Michigan, pedaling over 3,000 miles to Los Angeles to raise awareness for the LA wildfires and support the firefighters who risk everything. Fueled by friendship, determination, and heart, every mile brings them—and their cause—closer to making a real difference.
Who’s Riding
This summer, Pedal to the Rescue takes off with Michael “Mikey” Vansuilichem and Thomas “Tommy” Gehl II—two friends on a mission with pedals and purpose. Their cross-country bike adventure will raise awareness for LA’s devastating wildfires, and all funds raised through their GoFundMe go directly to the LA Fire Department Foundation. No detours, no shortcuts—just heart and hustle.
Why we Ride
Tommy and Mikey aren’t just biking for the thrill (though the hills will be brutal). They’re riding to honor the courage of LA’s firefighters and shine a light on the wildfires that have scorched lives, homes, and hope. This journey is about more than miles—it’s about giving back to the everyday heroes who run into the fire when others run out.
